The Role
What Does an HVAC Sheet Metal Mechanic Do?
HVAC sheet metal mechanics fabricate, assemble, and install the ductwork and air-handling components that move conditioned air through commercial buildings. That work covers everything from reading shop drawings and cutting sheet metal to hanging duct systems, sealing joints, and coordinating with HVAC installers, electricians, plumbers, and GCs to stay ahead of the framing, insulation, and ceiling schedule.
Expect to work in mechanical rooms, overhead spaces, rooftops, and tight crawlspaces. Sheet metal mechanics who thrive in new construction are the ones who are skilled both as fabricators and installers, continually keeping their projects moving forward.
Common Duties & Responsibilities
- Read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, and mechanical plans
- Measure, cut, bend, and assemble sheet metal into ductwork and fittings
- Install duct systems, hangers, supports, registers, grilles, and diffusers
- Seal joints, insulate as needed, and ensure proper airflow and fit
- Coordinate with HVAC installers, plumbers, electricians, and general contractors
- Operate fabrication equipment and install prefabricated components on-site
- Inspect work for alignment, code compliance, and system performance
- Repair or modify existing sheet metal systems when required
