The Role

What Does Construction Labor Do?

Construction labor forms the backbone of any job site. Whether moving materials, assisting skilled trades, pouring concrete, or setting up scaffolding, construction laborers are involved from the first day of site prep through final cleanup.

Expect to spend a lot of time working outdoors moving at a quick pace. Although the work is physically demanding, it’s also rewarding; especially for people who pride themselves on working with their hands and seeing the fruits of their labor take shape.

Common Duties & Responsibilities

  • Load, unload, move, and stage materials, tools, and equipment
  • Clean and prepare job sites, including removing debris and hazards
  • Dig trenches, backfill holes, compact soil, and assist with grading
  • Set up and take down scaffolding, barricades, temporary structures, and site protection
  • Assist carpenters, equipment operators, concrete crews, and other trades as needed
  • Mix, pour, spread, and finish concrete or other basic materials
  • Direct traffic, set signage, or help maintain safe access around active work zones
  • Operate basic hand tools and assist with light equipment operation under supervisor
  • Follow job site safety procedures and company standards

Candidate Fit

What We’re Looking For

We work with construction labor candidates at a range of experience levels. Here’s what most of our clients are looking for (Skinner can help with some of these prerequisites):

Dependable, Physically Ready Workers

Construction labor is demanding work, and the crews you support are counting on you to show up on time and keep pace on an active job site.

Ability to Perform Varied Tasks

You may be hauling materials in the morning and assisting a concrete crew in the afternoon. You don't need things to be predictable to do good work.

Commitment to Safety

You follow procedures, look out for the people around you, and understand that safety isn't optional when heavy equipment and active crews are nearby.

  • Some prior construction experience, whether in site prep, demolition, materials handling, or general labor
  • OSHA 10 certification, which is required or strongly preferred for most assignments. OSHA 30 is a plus for more experienced candidates
  • Familiarity with hand tools and power tools, including shovels, jackhammers, compactors, nail guns, air compressors, and concrete mixers
  • Experience handling materials like lumber, concrete, gravel, rebar, forms, piping, insulation, drywall, and demolition debris
  • Ability to read and follow instructions on active job sites
  • Reliability, punctuality, and attention to detail
  • Physical stamina and the ability to work in varying conditions, including heat, cold, noise, and uneven terrain
